Have you lost some of your energy, started sleeping worse, or felt your desire fading a little? You’re not alone. Many men experience a quiet hormonal shift in midlife – a kind of male menopause. Fortunately, there’s a lot you can do to maintain your strength, balance, and zest for life.
Perhaps you’ve noticed that your energy isn’t quite what it used to be. Your sleep feels lighter, your mood fluctuates more, and your drive – both in life and in the bedroom – has dropped slightly. It happens to many men in midlife, and it’s rarely just about stress or a busy schedule. The body is changing, and what’s known as andropause – the male equivalent of menopause – gradually begins to make itself felt.
While women’s menopause often comes suddenly, men’s hormonal transition tends to happen much more slowly. Testosterone, the male sex hormone, declines little by little. It’s the hormone that gives strength, energy, drive and vitality – and it also plays an important role in bones, muscles, the heart and the brain. When levels drop, many start to feel heavier in the body, less focused, and perhaps a bit “flat” in spirit.
Your body is trying to tell you something
It’s perfectly natural for hormones to change with age. The speed of this change, however, depends a great deal on lifestyle. Men who stay active, eat healthily, and get proper rest and sleep often experience a gentler transition. Genetics also play a part. Conversely, inactivity, excess weight, alcohol and stress can accelerate the process. Stress plays a special role. When the body produces high levels of the stress hormone cortisol for extended periods, testosterone production is inhibited – making symptoms more noticeable: fatigue, reduced libido, poor sleep, and mood swings. It’s the body’s way of signalling that it needs rest, balance, and an acceptance of life’s natural flow.
It’s not just about hormones
There’s more to it than testosterone alone. A substance in the blood called SHBG increases with age and binds part of the testosterone, leaving less of it free and active. At the same time, the hormone prolactin – which is normally kept in check by the neurotransmitter dopamine – can start to rise under stress or imbalance. This can further reduce energy and affect mood and sex drive. That’s why a man can have a “normal” testosterone level in a blood test yet still feel tired and unmotivated. It’s not just about the quantity, but how much of that testosterone the body can actually use.
You can do a lot yourself
The good news is that there’s much you can do to support your body through this phase of life. Physical activity – especially strength training and walks in the fresh air – naturally stimulates testosterone. Sleep and regular meals help stabilise blood sugar and lower stress hormones. From a nutritional point of view, it’s worth supporting the body with healthy fats, zinc, magnesium, and B vitamins – all of which play key roles in hormonal balance. Herbs such as maca, ginseng, and tribulus terrestris can help with energy and vitality, while ashwagandha and rhodiola offer calm and resilience in times of stress.
Finding your balance again
Losing a bit of drive in midlife isn’t a sign of weakness – it’s your body’s way of telling you it’s time to adjust course. Andropause isn’t a disease but a transition – a chance to support your body instead of pushing it. When you give it rest, nourishment and movement, your energy can return. You won’t be 25 again, but you can feel strong, calm and centred – the best version of yourself.
From Burnout to Joy – with Help from Strath
After more than 60 years, the Swiss brand Strath remains one of nature’s most elegant ways to support the body. I’ve stocked it on my shelves ever since I started ANNIs VITAL SHOP – and long before that, it was an essential part of my own home pharmacy. In a single teaspoon lies a whole universe of herbs that the body can easily absorb and use to regain its balance.
It was a food supplement called Bio-Strath – now simply known as Strath – that indirectly led me to change professions, from nurse and health visitor to working with complementary medicine.
At one point, I was completely exhausted, with no energy or motivation. A friend suggested I try Bio-Strath. I rushed to buy a bottle, and within four days, everything changed. My energy, joy, and focus returned – and with them, a deep interest in how natural remedies can support the body.
Fermented strength from nature
Strath isn’t just herbs in a bottle. It’s the result of a special fermentation process in which more than 30 herbs meet the yeast culture Saccharomyces cerevisiae. During fermentation, the herbs are “opened up”, making their active plant compounds far more accessible to the body. This means better absorption, bioavailability, and effectiveness – three key reasons why Strath truly works.
When the body finds calm and strength
Many people associate Strath with immune support – and yes, that’s part of the story. But Strath works more broadly. It strengthens communication between the gut and the nervous system, helps the body handle stress, and supports the natural balance between body and mind. You could say Strath speaks the body’s own language – gentle, calm, and effective.
Immunity and energy all year round
As the fermented herbs are absorbed, the immune system gets a natural lift. The body learns to respond in a balanced way – not too strongly, but just enough, so energy is used where it’s needed most. At the same time, the liver, kidneys and intestines – the body’s key detox organs – are supported.
Daily support
Strath isn’t a miracle cure that works overnight, but a quiet, steady ally that works in tune with your body. A teaspoon a day of Strath Elixir can make a noticeable difference over time, especially during the colder months when your immune system needs a little extra help.
Strath also comes as tablets and flavourless drops, which can even be used by children from the age of one.
Vitex – Nature’s Support for Femal Balance
When hormones are dancing, moods fluctuate, and energy dips, nature can help bring balance back. Vitex – also known as chaste tree – has been used for centuries to support women before and during menstruation, as well as through the menopause. Vitex helps the body find its own rhythm. It works gently but effectively – many women experience less irritability, fewer mood swings, and reduced breast tenderness when they use Vitex regularly. Over time, many notice a greater sense of calm, better sleep, and a more stable mood. Vitex supports the body from within, helping it restore its natural hormonal harmony.

When the Body Starts to Creak
I often meet people who sigh when their knees click, their fingers ache, or their back reminds them they’re no longer 25. It’s a natural part of life – but that doesn’t mean we have to accept pain.
Over the years, I’ve spoken to many who have benefited from nature’s own remedies for joint and mobility support. Two plants are mentioned again and again for their effects on sore joints – rosehip and devil’s claw. They work in different ways, but together they seem to bring a sense of ease to the body that many notice after just a few weeks.
You don’t have to be elderly to benefit from rosehip and devil’s claw. Younger people with sports injuries, minor falls or tension in the back and neck may also find a one- to three-month course helpful.
Rosehip is a true gift from nature. The small red berry is rich in vitamin C and unique plant compounds that help reduce inflammation and support cartilage in the joints. Many find that stiffness eases and movement becomes more comfortable.
Devil’s claw may sound fierce, but it acts gently and deeply. It grows in the warm soils of Africa and has been shown to ease muscle and joint pain – particularly when the body is strained by repetitive movement or wear and tear.
When we also provide the body with the building blocks it needs – such as omega-3 fatty acids, green vegetables, and daily movement without pushing past the pain – something wonderful often happens. The joints become more supple, and energy slowly returns. We don’t have to accept stiffness as part of ageing – the body wants to cooperate; it just needs a little help to do so.
